Christmas Hustle: Getting ahead of the deadline

Recent data from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reveals an interesting trend in tax filing behaviour: 4,409 individuals completed their 2023-2024 tax returns on Christmas Day itself, well ahead of the January 31st deadline.

The broader holiday period saw an impressive total of 40,072 taxpayers submitting their returns, demonstrating that financial responsibilities remain a priority even during the festive season.

Breaking Down the Holiday Filing Pattern

The Christmas period showed distinct patterns in filing behaviour:

  • Christmas Eve emerged as the peak filing day, with 23,731 returns submitted. The morning proved particularly busy, with 3,458 submissions recorded between 11:00 and 11:59 AM.

  • Christmas Day saw steady activity, with the highest concentration of filings occurring between 3:00 and 3:59 PM, when 368 people submitted their returns.

  • Boxing Day maintained the momentum with 11,932 submissions, peaking between 4:00 and 4:59 PM with 1,108 filings.

Benefits of Early Filing

Submitting tax returns ahead of schedule offers several advantages. Beyond the immediate relief of completing this annual obligation, early filing provides valuable time to plan for any tax payments due by January 31st. This proactive approach can help avoid the stress and potential errors often associated with last-minute submissions.
